6 Frequently Asked Questions
Question 1 – How is the window measured? – For basement windows measure from each side of the foundation (with the frame being removed) and from the top of the sill to the header above the existing window. For most bathroom replacement windows measure the opening that will exist after the window sash (not the frame) has been removed.
Question 2 – Is it best to purchase premade windows with mortar or silicone joints between the blocks? – Mortar and silicone joints each have their own advantages and disadvantages, but purchasing pre-made windows is almost always a cost savings vs. doing the project block by block.
- Mortar Advantages – harder to break through, traditional masonry look, more variation in joint size
- Silicone Advantages – all glass look, windows come out smaller in size, easy to clean.

Question 3 – Can these windows be made with colors, different designs, or personalized? – Yes, we have the broadest colored glass block, glass block designs, and can even personalize your blocks with one of a kind etched and engraved blocks.
Question 4 – Are your windows made with frames or without frames? – Most basement windows are made without frames and then mortared into concrete block or poured wall foundations. In remodeling projects the majority of bathroom windows are pre-made without frames, while in new construction projects it is best to use the vinyl frame glass block windows.

Question 5 – How do you finish bathroom windows on the inside and outside? – This question depends on the surrounding materials on the inside and outside. Although each job condition should be looked at individually below is a brief explanation to help you.
- Inside – If there is existing tile in good condition that returns to the window being replaced butt the glass block up to the tile and mortar it into place. If the existing returns are not in good shape this area can be improved with a vinyl trim kit (see the picture below), new tile, or a solid surface material like cultured marble.
- Outside – For brick and block openings mortar the window in. For stucco, vinyl or wood siding the window is generally sealed to aluminum or PVC coated vinyl coil stock wrapped around wood trim (see the picture below).
